  • [es-pree de less-ka/-iay] (idiom) A witty remark that occurs to you too late, literally on the way down the stairs. The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations defines esprit de l'escalier as, "An untranslatable phrase, the meaning of which is that one only thinks on one's way downstairs of the smart retort one might have made in the drawing room."

In alternative universes that happen to occupy the same space/time as this one, I'm a computer programmer and writer of books on JAVA, a Scottish police detective, a member of the town council in a small town in Ohio, a comedian, and an Irish folk singer. I'm also somebody in Australia but I forget who. I've often wanted to hold a reunion for all of me. I wondered if we'd get along with us.

Gromit is the greatest hero in movie history since Erroll Flynn.

I googled myself once and was shocked at all the things I've done! There is an "Amanda's Harlow Doll" that will be on sale soon at the Cracker Barrel. Last June I won a pair of Dorhina Jeans " the jeans with the one-inch zipper" and Lord knows I need me some of those. I won a "LEAP" scholarship to Missouri State University. I spoke July 5th at an English Catholic church about "God and Medicine." I was born in 1842 in Texas or Arkansas and died in 1979. I was recently a maid of honor at a wedding in Amarillo, TX. And I came in 28th place in the 50 meter backstroke (which sounds about right for me) in the Michigan YMCA state swimming championships. And, I live on Hokkaido and I teach ESL at the NHK (?) Cultural Centres in Sapporo and Shin-Sapporo and am a member of the Japan Association for Language Teaching, so you should keep your eyes open for "me" out there.
